Innovation Spotlight: The NanoJar™ for Concentrates by 14th Round

Good things come in small packages, it’s the little things that count… the puns just write themselves. But all kidding aside, often the biggest innovations do come in the smallest packages.

Typically hash rosins and other cannabis extracts are sold by the half gram or gram in jars with a capacity of 5mL - 9mL.These oversized jars were borrowed from the cosmetics industry and adapted to include a child-resistant cap on them, meaning they weren’t purpose-built for cannabis concentrates and are far from ideal for several reasons. Primarily, these cosmetics jars are too big for their contents, leaving way too much extra space in the jar. This ‘headroom’ virtually guarantees that once opened – if not sooner if the cap doesn’t create an air-tight seal - oxygen will be trapped inside the jar and begin to degrade the quality of the concentrate.

It’s well understood that oxygen is one of the biggest enemies of cannabis extracts. This is because oxygen can cause the breakdown of cannabinoids and terpenes in the extract, leading to a loss of potency and flavor – something that will be very disappointing when you pay top dollar for fire extracts.

Now for the first time, there is a product that addresses these issues. Introducing the NanoJar™, the smallest child-resistant jar in the world. This simple, yet impactful, innovation from our colleagues at 14th Round is the epitome of combining form & function to address this unmet need that has existed for years in concentrate packaging.

The patent pending NanoJar™ uses several components to ensure that premium extracts are optimally stored to prevent oxidation. First, by reducing the capacity of the container from the typical 5-9mL down to the minimum viable capacity we are able to better preserve the quality of the extract by reducing the surface area of the extract that comes into contact with oxygen. When cannabis extracts are stored in the standard large jar, the empty space in the container allows air to circulate around the extract, increasing the risk of oxidation and degradation over time. By using a smaller jar, however, there is less empty space in the container, which reduces the amount of extract that is exposed to air and slows the degradation process.

The NanoJar™ also features a plug-style seal with a triple rib. In combination with a compressive radial seal at the top edge of the jar, it provides multiple additional layers of protection against oxygen infiltration.

The reduced surface area inside the NanoJar™ also means less wasted concentrate spread out and stuck to the sides of the container. Instead of forcing you to painstakingly scrape the container with a dab tool, the NanoJar’s rounded bottom eliminates square internal corners and edges that are hard to scrape out and can trap valuable concentrate.

Using a smaller jar makes it easier to control the temperature and humidity of the storage environment as well. When a jar is smaller, it can be more easily placed in a cool, dark, and dry location, which is optimal for preserving the quality of the extract. This can help to prevent extract from becoming too warm or moist, or exposed to UV rays, which contributes to degradation overtime.

Finally, using a smaller jar can also make handling and transporting the extract easier. A smaller jar is typically more compact and easier to store in a backpack, purse, or pocket, which is convenient for people on the go.

For Jungle Boys, Palm Springs served as their official Hall of Flowers debut, marking the first time that Jungle Boys products were made available to California cannabis retailers outside of their owned or affiliated dispensaries.

For dosist, another acclaimed brand that has received accolades from the likes of TIME Magazine and Fast Company, the event was the perfect opportunity to showcase their latest products. In this case, the highlights were a special holiday edition of their popular Arouse gummies, and an upgraded version of their all-in-one dose pens, which now combine the purest high potency distillate with single strain live resin terpene extracts.

Sherbinskis–masterminded by pioneer and industry legend, Mario Guzman–proved once more that its long-standing place in the market is beyond justified. Offerings included a diverse variety of gelato strains as well as the classic Sunset Sherbet. Sherbinskis was certainly one of the centerpieces of our showcase.

To cap it all off, Headwaters, a long-time, premium cultivator that’s been sourcing some of the top brands in cannabis for years, took the leap and had a beyond successful debut for their own, first-ever set of retail brands: Mr. Zips and the eponymous Headwaters. The latter geared towards the premium segment, and the former geared towards the value segment.

The stimulation of in-person connection, as well as the thrill of direct engagement with the products, make for an exciting and inspiring experience. That’s something many people have been missing during the pandemic. Come get a feel for it yourself next May, during the latest edition of Hall of Flowers, Palm Springs.
